You’d like to know what the process of hiring a builder is and what happens when you contact B.W. Reed & Son.
1. How do I take the first step?
You just give us a call on 01344 456329, email paul@bwreed.co.uk or send a message via our contact form at the bottom of any page of this website.
If you are not ready to chat yet – you could take a look at our FAQ or Builders Blog to find out a bit more about the process.
2. We pop round to meet you and talk about your project.
Once we get your message, Paul will get back to you to organise a date and time he can pop round for a chat.
At this stage it’s about understanding the size and scope of the project to put an estimate together and to see if you feel it’s a good fit to work with us.
A large house renovation can mean you see a lot of us so it’s good if we get along and can communicate well together. Maybe also show him the project area as it is at the moment.
He might ask for a copy of any plans you have, printed out, so he can get a more detailed look as he puts an estimate together back at the office. The more info you can give him – the closer his estimate can be.
3. Supplying your quotation.
If you have signed off plans at this stage it’s helpful for Paul to see them. Without them we can only give you an estimate rather than a quote.
If you do have signed off plans at this stage then Paul will most likely ask to take a copy of them away with him so he can work out a more accurate quote for the building work.
You’ll get a fully itemised quotation that explains what is and isn’t included and what needs scoping out further down the line. Unless you know exactly what materials you are using and what windows and doors you are likely to have it’s tricky to pin this down tight.
Once we send you the quote you can ask questions and feedback any changes you might want.
4. Let’s get you booked in.
If you are happy with the quote then the next step is to get your job booked in. We tell you how long it will roughly be before we can start the project and take a non-refundable deposit from you to secure your place in line.
We run a waiting list system because we are working on large scale projects that take time to complete and can present unexpected delays that need to be worked around. We don’t want to give you a set date that is unrealistic and unpredictable for anyone to predict. That is the fairest way to manage our workload and your expectatins.
There are times when it is possible to start sooner than expected but we will keep you fully informed of the changin landscape.
Your deposit is non-refundable AND it does not guarantee when your start date will be, however it does hold your place in the que.
As soon as we know a more accurate start date we will let you know and we can generally give you a couple of months notice.
5. Meeting our suppliers and choosing your options
Once you have accepted the quote for the job and are in the queue, you will have another meeting with Paul and/or Max to get a detailed project understanding.
We’ll also get you to arrange visits with our suppliers to discuss your options for:
- Windows and doors
- Electrics
- Central heating and boiler requirement
- Flooring
- Cladding
- Kitchen design and fitting
However, these trades have worked with B.W. Reed for decades and all our teams are well versed at working together to give you as smooth an experience as possible, they will each quote you directly for their work to save you money and cut out the middle man in the process.
6. Off we go!
When we have agreed your start date we’ll be in constant communication.
Once work has started on your project you will have a direct message thread to Paul and the team so we are all in the loop with what’s happening and when.
We want this to be a positive experience for you and will do all we can to keep you comfortable with amenities and dust to the minimum possible.
